Regional information

Bremen is a city with about 550,000 habitants, with Bremerhaven having another 120,000 inhabitants. Together they have a size of 400 km2. It is the second oldest still existing urban republic in the world.

The Federal State of Bremen has a long tradition in shipping, logistics and maritime industries. Bremen is also the first aerospace production location in Europe. It is famous for well known brands of the food industry and car-manufacturing site. Due to changes in the maritime sector Bremerhaven is facing severe challenges in restructuring the maritime sector.

It is the goal of the Federal State of Bremen to make Bremerhaven and Bremen to the leading competence centre and production area for offshore wind energy in North-West Germany. With 185 member companies the windenergy agency bremerhaven/ bremen e.V. (wab) info@windenergie-agentur.de is positioning itself as the regional wind energy business network with competences in offshore wind energy.

The region has a high concentration of SME’s working in the field of wind energy. Basically the whole supply chain for wind energy is therefore available locally (products and services). The Federal State of Bremen estimates the number of jobs at approx. 1,000. Within the larger region there are probably several thousands of jobs in the wind energy sector. The maritime sector (ship building, maritime support and supply) is still strong but facing restructuring and partially downsizing. There is some, but not too much, experience with offshore oil and gas (or related issues).

The Senator for Environment, Construction, Transport and European Affairs is responsible for planning, construction and maintenance of the public infrastructure in the Federal State of Bremen. The development of the urban infrastructures is inseparably connected with the topic climate change. Right at the top on the agenda stand therefore the further arrangement of a climaticcareful power supply, the ecological figuration of the building politics and the environmentalcompatible organization of the traffic policy. In these challenges are at the same time large chances, which it is valid to use for a successful economic development of Bremen and Bremerhaven.

SUBVE has already been working as partner in the former Interreg III B project „Pushing Offshore Wind Energy Regions – POWER“. Altogether with 28 partners from 9 North Sea regions a North Sea Competence Network for Offshore Wind Energy has been structured.
