The Region Västra Götaland (West Gotaland) lies on the Swedish west coast, facing the east part of the North Sea. The region has approximately 1,8 million inhabitants, living in an area of about the same size as Belgium (25 000 square km). There are totally 49 cities and municipalities in the region, of which Gothenburg with 500 000 inhabitants is the biggest one.
Almost every multinational company, as Volvo, Ericsson, SKF and others, are located in Gothenburg. In the rest of the region dominate small- and middle-size enterprises.
