Regional information

Bremen is a city with about 550,000 habitants, with Bremerhaven having another 120,000 inhabitants. Together they have a size of 400 km2. It is the second oldest still existing urban republic in the world.

The Federal State of Bremen has a long tradition in shipping, logistics and maritime industries. Bremen is also the first aerospace production location in Europe. It is famous for well known brands of the food industry and car-manufacturing site. Due to changes in the maritime sector Bremerhaven is facing severe challenges in restructuring the maritime sector.

It is the goal of the Federal State of Bremen to make Bremerhaven and Bremen to the leading competence centre and production area for offshore wind energy in North-West Germany. With 185 member companies the windenergy agency bremerhaven/ bremen e.V. (wab) info@windenergie-agentur.de is positioning itself as the regional wind energy business network with competences in offshore wind energy.

The region has a high concentration of SME’s working in the field of wind energy. Basically the whole supply chain for wind energy is therefore available locally (products and services). The Federal State of Bremen estimates the number of jobs at approx. 1,000. Within the larger region there are probably several thousands of jobs in the wind energy sector. The maritime sector (ship building, maritime support and supply) is still strong but facing restructuring and partially downsizing. There is some, but not too much, experience with offshore oil and gas (or related issues).

Partner information

BIS is partner for the already existing businesses, start-ups and potentially interested external businesses in Bremerhaven. Three departments are working in the fields of economic development, infrastructure and tourism development as a one stop agency on behalf of the City of Bremerhaven and the State of Bremen.

The Lead Beneficiary of the “POWER cluster” project is located in the first department of BIS GB I economic development, technology subsidies, location marketing and acquisition.

BIS has already been working as Lead partner in the former Interreg III B project „Pushing Offshore Wind Energy Regions – POWER“. Altogether with 28 partners from 9 North Sea regions a North Sea Competence Network for Offshore Wind Energy has been structured.

At the same time BIS has been established the north German 'Centre for the Production and Installation of Offshore Wind Turbines' in Luneort, an industrial estate in Bremerhaven.
Embedded within a sector-specific infrastructure, the 80-hectare site, directly located at the seagoing vessel-deep water, offers everything the wind energy industry needs:

  • production and assembly areas for making foundations, towers, nacelles and rotor blades, as well as for storage and final assembly
  • traffic areas with the load-bearing capacity and dimensions for gravity-driven industrial trucks for offshore components
  • test stand for complete nacelle systems, deepwater cargo handling terminal with connection to inland waterways

Reason for participating in POWER cluster
For BIS the transnational cooperation in the field of offshore wind energy is an important precondition for establishing Bremerhaven as an Offshore Wind Energy Competence Centre.
