On May 30th and 1st June 2011 the POWER cluster final conference marked the formal end of three years of successful transnational cooperation.
The conference highlighted the project achievements and offered delegates the opportunity to network, exchange knowledge and discuss opportunities and challenges to the offshore wind energy sector in the North Sea Region - now and in the future.

The expansion of the offshore wind industry has the potential to profoundly change the economic and ecologic face of the North Sea region. Public participation into this process is the key to the broad acceptance of the pace and the direction of future changes. Get involved!

POWER cluster Mapergy is an interactive web based map to show companies involved in the offshore wind industry The database includes the following types of companies: businesses, academic organisations as well as local and regional government. All companies are displayed under a common classification system (devised by Douglas Westwood). Each company displayed on the map has a role (e.g. manufacturer/supply) and category (e.g. wind turbines) assigned.

Developing a project application with the purpose of getting grants from an EU programme can be a challenging and time-consuming process – typically with a duration of 9-13 months.
POWER cluster has developed an online “Project Development Facility” designed to help non-experienced/less experienced companies, organizations, NGOs, researchers, etc. with the application process in relation to EU programmes. It should be noted that this tool is not designed for a specific EU programme, but to give applicants an overall indication of the project development and application process.
The tool is intended to be used by the institution to provide an overview of the long application process within the EU programmes. It advises on how project participants should act on each step in the project development cycle. Further, it refers to several and relevant websites.

POWER Cluster project finishes with a flourish
The POWER cluster project, which helped develop the offshore wind industry in the North Sea region of Europe, has recently concluded after more than three years of hard work. . Key achievements included organising a series of international business to business events which lead to more than 2,300 new business contacts and the award of contracts, as well as the production of two detailed studies.
One such event was a special conference held on 16th-17th June at OrbisEnergy, the specialist technology, innovation and incubation hub for offshore renewables in East Anglia, which was attended by Swedish officials and politicians. Delegates spent two days talking to key energy figures and discussing the positive social acceptance of offshore wind farms experienced in the UK, and in particular East Anglia. Read more
Cheaper offshore wind farms in sight
The Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy has published a report compiled by Deloitte indicating that the cost of building and operating offshore wind farms can be reduced significantly. The Deloitte report, based on the 2010 tender for Anholt Offshore Wind Farm, is an analysis of how competition in the offshore wind power area can be increased, and a lower consumer price achieved. Deloitte forecasts that the price for building and operating offshore wind farms, despite the increasing demand for offshore wind turbines, can be cut by between 25% and 30% by 2020, given the right framework guidelines and tender conditions. Denmark - Wind Power Hub
The Danish wind industry is unique in many ways. A proud history of being first mover in both onshore and offshore wind energy has made us front runner in innovative wind solutions that are in demand all over the world. These solutions have created the backbone in the energy system, with almost 25% of the electricity supply consisting of wind energy. A penetration rate unmatched by any other country. Invest in Denmark and the Danish Wind Industry Association (DWIA) have published a brochure “Denmark – Wind Power Hub” focusing on the wind industry and some of the challenges that lie ahead on the road to 50% wind energy in the energy system by 2020. POWER cluster commissioned a study entitled: “Overcoming challenges for the offshore wind industry and learning from the oil and gas industry”. The study focused on how some of the challenges facing the offshore wind industry can be overcome and includes a detailed analysis of what can be learned from the oil and gas industry. Read more
dena Grid Study II - Remodeling the energy system
Germany and Europe have set the course for a fundamental remodeling of the energy supply system. The focus is on climate protection, security of supply and economic viability within a deregulated European energy market. This is closely related to the accelerated
pace of expansion in the use of renewable energy sources. With its broad system approach, dena Grid Study II describes new ways of developing Germany’s integrated grid with regard to the expansion of renewable energy sources and taking not only an economically optimized conventional power generation system but also European power trading into account. Denmark can create 47,000 new jobs in the green offshore industry
With the right investments, Denmark could create 47,000 new jobs over the next decade, says new report from the Alliance for Offshore Renewables. Danish companies now accounts for approximately 90% of the worldwide market for offshore wind turbines, and Danish companies have been involved in the installation of all existing wind farms in the world.
"We have a knowledge and experience that no one else can match, and the market is growing explosively. But we also see that other countries - England, Holland, Belgium and Germany in the lead - are investing heavily in green energy offshore. If we are to retain just a part of the market, Denmark must invest more in research, innovation, test and demonstration facilities, electricity infrastructure and education, "says Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, president of the Alliance for Offshore Renewables. KPMG Germany study report “Offshore Wind in Europe”
“Offshore Wind in Europe 2010” is an update of a previous analysis of the German and European offshore wind energy market development and underlying economics which was done by KPMG in 2007. Since then, offshore wind grew up from infancy. The study was initiated and supported by the POWER cluster project partner German Offshore Wind Energy Foundation (GOWEF). GOWEF asked KPMG to analyze whether Germany’s current legal framework is suitable to allow for ongoing financing and profitable operation of offshore wind projects, also compared with other European markets, notably the UK. Former Danish PM Heads Offshore Renewables Alliance
”Now we have created the platform which is necessary for preserving Denmark’s dominance within the field of renewable energy technology. I am convinced that the Alliance for Offshore Renewables will soon evoke a positive response in both Denmark and Brussels,” said former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, who was elected chairman of the alliance. POWER cluster is RegioStars 2011 Award Finalist
The jury for the RegioStars 2011 Awards has chosen the POWER cluster project as a RegioStars 2011 Finalist. The Managing Body and the Project Manager of finalist projects will be invited to attend the RegioStars Awards ceremony currently scheduled for 23 June 2011 in Brussels. More information on this and the Regions for Economic Change conference will be sent in Early 2011. World’s second largest windfarm a “windfall” opportunity for East Anglia companies
The windfarm, which is likely to have at least 1.000 turbines, dwarfing the 30 turbine Scroby Sands windfarm off Great Yarmouth, will be build about 15 miles off the north Suffolk coast and north Suffolk coast.
John Best, chief executive of EEEGR , a POWER cluster project partner, said: “We have a unique opportunity with our geographical location, shallow water, twin ports Yarmouth and Lowestoft and established skills in offshore engineering to make the east of England the home of renewable energy”.
